Magnicharters, a Mexican low‑cost carrier, is the airline that has just filed for bankruptcy, following the earlier collapse and multiple bankruptcies of Spirit Airlines in the U.S.

What just happened

  • Magnicharters filed for bankruptcy protection this week in the First District Court in Mexico City.

  • The airline operates as a low‑budget/leisure carrier, and its move into court protection is being framed in some coverage as “another low budget airline” falling into insolvency after Spirit’s troubles and shutdown.

Spirit’s situation in the background

  • Spirit Airlines, the U.S. ultra‑low‑cost carrier known for its bright yellow planes, went through two Chapter 11 bankruptcies in less than a year and ultimately ceased operations after 34 years.

  • It cited soaring fuel costs, heavy debt, and a failed merger strategy as key factors, and its shutdown in early May 2026 has been widely interpreted as a major blow to the ultra‑low‑cost model in North America.
