The New York attorney general on Thursday filed suit against two cryptocurrency companies and their promoters, alleging a pyramid scheme that defrauded hundreds of thousands of people out of more than $1 billion.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan state court, claims the defendants preyed on people’s faith, focusing on Haitian and other immigrant communities. The victims were targeted through prayer groups and through social media, sometimes in Creole, according to court papers.
