Washington State to Increase Licensing Fees 

The Washington State Department of Licensing announced it will adjust professional licensing fees starting Jan. 1, 2027, to cover rising administrative and compliance operating costs.

The Washington State Department of Licensing announced it started formal rulemaking on July 1, 2026, to implement professional licensing fee increases across its Business and Professions Division. The adjusted fee schedules will take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

State law requires the department to conduct regular financial reviews of licensing revenues and expenditures to ensure regulatory oversight operations remain self-sustaining. The agency confirmed that its latest annual review revealed that existing fee levels are no longer sufficient to maintain long-term financial stability.

According to the agency, professional licensing fees fund core administrative capabilities. These include processing new applications and annual renewals, maintaining corporate licensing records, and providing customer service to businesses. The revenues also support agency information technology infrastructure, ongoing compliance audits, and enforcement activities.

The department has not yet published the exact amounts of the revised fee schedule, but officials indicated that information will be distributed to affected business entities well in advance of the Jan. 1, 2027, implementation deadline.

Licensing structures within the Business and Professions Division cover dozens of professional categories operating in the state, including collection agencies and their respective branch offices.
