AT&T to pay $177M in data breach settlement
AT&T is set to pay a $177 million class action settlement after two alleged data breaches where sensitive customer data was released on the dark web.

If you were an AT&T customer affected by one of the data breaches in 2024, an important deadline is coming up fast.
As in Thursday, Dec. 18.
That’s the deadline for eligible claimants to file for a portion of a $177 million class action settlement. AT&T denies the allegations in the lawsuits.

When is deadline to file claim in AT&T settlement?
The deadline to submit a claim is Thursday, Dec. 18. This means that online forms must be submitted or mailed claims must be postmarked by that date.
How to file a claim in AT&T settlement
AT&T customers who are eligible for the settlement can file a claim online at telecomdatasettlement.com. Claims can also be sent by mail — and must be postmarked by Dec. 18 — to:

How to know if you’re eligible to file claim in AT&T settlement
There are two groups of eligible AT&T customers who can file a claim to receive money from the settlement.
- The first class is AT&T customers affected in the March 30, 2024, data breach.
- The second class is AT&T customers affected in the July 12, 2024, data breach.
- Some customers may be included in both classes.

How much could I get in AT&T settlement payments?
Customers will receive different payment amounts depending on which settlement class they are part of.
Those who were part of both data breaches could get up to $7,500, according to the settlement website.
Here’s a breakdown of the payment types:
- Customers affected by March 30, 2024, data breach can get up to $5,000. You’ll need to document your losses.
- Customers affected by July 12, 2024, data breach can get up to $2,500. Again, you’ll need to have documentation to prove your losses.
- Customers impacted by both could receive up to $7,500.

What if you do nothing to participate in AT&T class action settlement?
“If you do nothing, you will not receive any benefits from this settlement,” according to the AT&T Data Incident Settlement FAQ.
“If the settlement is granted final approval — which is scheduled for Jan. 15 — and becomes final, you will not be able to start a lawsuit, continue with a lawsuit, or be part of any other lawsuit against defendants or the other released parties based on any claim that could have been or that was brought relating to the data incidents.”
What happened in AT&T data breaches?
In the first incident on March 30, 2024, AT&T announced that customer information — including names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers and passcodes — was released on the dark web.
Four months later, on July 12, 2024, AT&T announced customers’ call and text records had been illegally downloaded in a second incident, according to the settlement website.
According to the lawsuit, the information was  put on the dark web or illegally downloaded off a third-party cloud platform.

AT&T data breaches may have affected more than 7 million customers
The incidents are believed to have affected more than 7 million people who had AT&T accounts in 2024 and more than 65 million people who had AT&T accounts between 2019 and 2024, according to the lawsuit and a 2024 statement from AT&T.
What did AT&T say about data incidents?
AT&T has denied the allegations in the lawsuits.
The company agreed to a settlement to “avoid the cost and risk of a trial and related appeals, while providing benefits to settlement class members.”
The company previously said in a statement to USA TODAY it is “committed to protecting our customers’ data and ensuring their continued trust in us,” adding that it agreed to the settlement to avoid continued litigation.
How many AT&T customers are there in Florida, US?
“AT&T provides more than 100 million U.S. consumers with communications experiences across mobile and broadband,” according to its website.
AT&T’s “100% fiber network now has the ability to serve 22 million+ consumer locations, and our 5G network covers 290 million people across the United States.”
The company does not provide a breakdown by state.
Revenue in 2023 was $118 billion.
