HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – A Houghton County business is taking steps to improve financial literacy across the U.P.
The Breakwater Federal Credit Union is inviting U.P. schools and teachers to partner up this school year. The bank says it would work with educators to bring financial literacy activities and events into the classroom. Within the last year, the bank held two high school financial reality fairs in Houghton and L’Anse, as well as workshops and classroom visits.
“Our vision is really to empower our community members with the tools and resources they need to be financially independent and financially well,” Breakwater FCU Marketing & Community Relations Coordinator Kayleigh White said.
According to White, the bank has helped educate over 400 community members and students at various events. White says the community has been asking to learn more about finances.
“A lot of people have expressed to us that they wish they would have known these things sooner and they wish they would have started budgeting and keeping track of their expenses sooner and making better decisions when they were younger,” White continued. “So, it’s one of those things where it’s really important to start early.”
White encourages educators to reach out to her at the credit union to begin arranging events. She can be reached at kayleigh.white@breakwaterfcu.org or by calling the credit union.
