Tracking credit card balances at times is tough to juggle, especially if you unexpectedly fall behind or miss payments, leading to late fees and a lower credit score.
Late credit card payments affect many consumers across the country, but it’s glaring in some states compared to others highlighted in a recent WalletHub report.

Analysis of the top states with increasing credit card delinquency
Local perspective:
Data from WalletHub reveals that Minnesota, Iowa, and Kansas have higher delinquency rates and this is what researchers are saying about each state.
Minnesota
Minnesota has the highest increase in credit card delinquency among states, with area residents late on almost 33% more credit cards in the second quarter of 2025 than they were during the first quarter of the year.

WalletHub found that state residents’ trouble paying their credit card bills is magnified because they have large credit card debts overall. Moreover, Minnesota ranks 26th in the nation where consumers are accumulating a high amount of debt.
Iowa
Iowa ranks second with the highest increase in credit card delinquency, with residents late on payments for almost 32% more credit cards in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter in 2025.
WalletHub noted that despite the state ranking near the bottom nationwide for credit card debt consumers racked up, Iowa residents are gradually raising that debt compared to residents in other states.
Kansas
Kansas is third on the list with the state’s credit card delinquency soaring more than 30% between first quarter and second quarter of 2025.
According to WalletHub, the state has the lowest median credit card debt in the U.S., and the 18th-smallest increase in this kind of debt between the first two quarters of 2025.
However, WalletHub determined that the state’s high delinquency rate might be tied to its economy, since it ranks 34th in overall economic strength, playing a factor in households having less financial flexibility to remain current on their credit card debts.
