Debt collectors now have an association to begin a new era of professionalism, regulatory compliance and ethical practices.

Za’ba Hasrin, president of the Association of Professional Debt Collection Agency Malaysia, in launching the body today, said there had been widespread concerns about aggressive collection methods, Bernama reported.

He said this led to the formation of the association to restore public trust through clear ethical guidelines that will ensure debt recovery remains firm yet fair, sustainable and respectful of the dignity of debtors.

“Debt collection is not just about recovering money – it is about balancing financial responsibility with fairness.

“When done right, it stabilises markets, supports businesses and gives individuals a dignified path forward,” he said.

Za’ba added that the association also aimed to attract new talent into the industry.

Although debt collection is often stigmatised, he emphasised its essential role across sectors, including banking, phone companies and credit management.

To support this, he said they would implement structured training programmes and provide certifications.

Certified professionals can pursue careers in banks, telecommunications and businesses requiring credit experts.

Za’ba also called on all industry stakeholders to collaborate in creating a responsible, ethical and regulated debt collection environment, ensuring that no legitimate debtor faces harassment or abuse, but is treated fairly and within the law.
