One person’s junk mail may be another’s treasure, but if you’re tired of credit card offers piling up in your mailbox, there is an easy way to stop them.
Credit card companies use information from your credit report to “prescreen” or “preapprove” people. The information they use comes from credit bureaus.
The three major credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – have a website and phone number to help you opt out of these credit card offers.
Here’s what to do:
- Go to OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-5-OPTOUT
- Give your name, address, social security number, and date of birth and you’ll stop receiving credit card offers for 5 years.
You can make the change permanent by signing a form and mailing it in.
Consider this: Before you decide to opt out, you may want to consider the benefits of these offers. Those include access to easy credit and special deals.
You’ll also be limiting your options and may miss out on learning about a company or product you don’t know about.
Of course, if you do opt out, you’ll cut the clutter and won’t be tempted to add to your debt.
