WASHINGTON— The CFPB told staff Tuesday that it will remain open if the government shuts down, according to an email seen by Reuters.
Unlike most federal agencies, the CFPB’s budget is not set through annual congressional appropriations, meaning its operations are unaffected by a lapse in government funding.
Since President Donald Trump assumed control of the agency earlier this year, its operations have been significantly scaled back as officials pursue court approval to dismiss the majority of staff, Reuters noted.
“CFPB will continue operations in the event of a shutdown, even though some other parts of the federal government would be affected,” Chief Operating Officer Adam Martinez wrote in the email, according to Reuters. “Therefore CFPB employees should plan to report to work as usual on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.”
Representatives for the CFPB did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The agency is grappling with a funding shortfall and has cautioned employees that congressional limits could force job cuts. It has also started preparing furlough plans as resources dwindle, Reuters noted.
