Ohio is facing a tough housing reality — it now ranks fourth in the nation for foreclosures.

According to a new study from the New Jersey Real Estate Network, 1,842 Ohio properties are currently listed in foreclosure, making up 5.31% of all homes for sale in the state. That figure is more than double the national foreclosure rate of 2.22%, underscoring the financial strain many Buckeye State families are feeling.

California tops the national list, with more than 11,500 foreclosures, representing 8.25% of all its listings. Wisconsin follows at 7.40%, and New Jersey comes in third at 5.60%.

Ohio sits just behind, edging out New Mexico, Kentucky, and Oklahoma.

Experts say the numbers highlight ongoing challenges in the Midwest, where housing affordability, rising costs, and lingering economic pressures continue to hit homeowners hard.

At the other end of the spectrum, Maine reported just five foreclosures — only 0.06% of all listings. That stark contrast shows the gap between the nation’s hardest-hit and most stable housing markets.
