TriMet will offer free, systemwide rides on New Year’s Eve after 8 p.m., sponsored by OregoniansCredit Union, to help people get safe rides to and from celebrations.
What the partnership does
-
Oregonians Credit Union is sponsoring TriMet’s New Year’s Eve free-ride program this year, covering fares so riders do not have to pay after 8 p.m. on December 31.
-
The goal is to encourage responsible choices, reduce impaired driving, and make it easier for people to get home safely after ringing in the new year.
When and where rides are free
-
Free rides begin at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and continue through the end of service, including trips after midnight into the early hours of New Year’s Day.
-
All TriMet buses, MAX light rail lines, and Portland Streetcar are included in the free rides promotion after 8 p.m.
Service details
-
MAX Blue, Green, Orange, and Yellow lines will run with extended late-night service, generally about every 30 minutes, with many trips operating past 2 a.m.
-
LIFT paratransit service is also free after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and some late-night bus trips along MAX corridors will provide extra overnight coverage.
How to ride
-
No Hop card tap or ticket purchase is needed after 8 p.m.; riders can simply board and ride during the free period.
-
Riders are encouraged to plan trips in advance using TriMet’s online trip planner and to check for real-time updates before and during travel.
Safety focus
-
TriMet emphasizes using transit instead of driving if drinking or staying out late on New Year’s Eve, framing free rides as part of a broader effort to keep streets safer.
-
Riders can report non-urgent safety concerns by calling or texting TriMet’s rider support line, with 911 reserved for emergencies.
