Acadia Federal Credit Union, a St. John Valley–based institution headquartered in Fort Kent, is opening new full-service branches in Presque Isle and Brewer, bringing its total branch count to nine.
Key facts
-
The credit union has historically focused on rural northern Aroostook County communities, from St. Francis to Madawaska to Ashland.
-
It tested a more urban market in 2017 by merging with Eastern Maine Medical Center Federal Credit Union in Bangor, which leadership describes as having gone very well.
-
The new Brewer branch is located at 618 Wilson Street and opened in early March with seven employees.
-
The Presque Isle branch, at 725 Main Street on the former Bonanza Steakhouse site, is set to open Monday and will employ six people.
Strategy and positioning
-
President and CEO Joey Cannan frames the move as expanding a relationship-focused, community-centric model—“not just about savings and checking and loans” but about long-term member relationships and local impact.
-
The Presque Isle facility was designed to reflect local identity, including a “This is Presque Isle” mural with historical city photos and imagery of local potato fields to create a welcoming, community-tied space.
-
Leadership emphasizes becoming part of the new markets through philanthropy and partnerships, positioning Acadia FCU as a good corporate citizen rather than just another financial institution.
