President Trump endorsed Representative Andy Barr on Friday for the Kentucky Republican Senate primary to succeed retiring Senator Mitch McConnell. Trump announced his support on Truth Social, stating “I know Andy well, and he is always a Vote we can count on because he knows what it takes to GET THINGS DONE and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”.

Race Dynamics

The endorsement came alongside Trump offering businessman Nate Morris, who had been backed by Elon Musk, an ambassadorship to exit the race. Morris agreed to withdraw and subsequently endorsed Barr, effectively consolidating support behind Trump’s preferred candidate. The Republican primary, scheduled for May 19, is now down to two major contenders: Barr and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

Political Impact

Kentucky Republican strategists believe Trump’s endorsement effectively decides the primary in this strongly Republican state where Trump won 64% of the vote in 2024. Scott Jennings, a Kentucky-based Republican strategist, predicted the endorsement would leave Cameron with “minimal chances” and forecast a “decisive victory for Barr”. Former Kentucky Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer said the endorsement shows Barr has run a “perfect race” and that Trump “likes to support winners”.

Barr’s Background

Barr has served in the House since January 2013 and currently chairs the influential Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy Subcommittee on the House Financial Services Committee. In response to the endorsement, Barr pledged to work with Trump “100% to deliver for Kentucky and to keep Making America Great Again”.
