The benefits of the Sustainable Car program, which eliminated the Industrialized Products Tax (IPI) on lower-priced models produced in Brazil, boosted sales in July but failed to sustain momentum in August. Last month, registrations of cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses totaled 225,300 units, down 5.05% from August 2024, according to the National Federation of Vehicle Distribution (FENABRAVE).

Year to date, however, sales reached 1.66 million units, a 2.77% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

FENABRAVE President Arcelio Júnior expressed concern about access to financing. “We are worried about high interest rates and the economic slowdown, which could affect results in this segment. But we will monitor the market before revising our projections,” he said in a statement.

Hybrids and electrics

Hybrid vehicles are approaching 120,000 units sold this year, up 74.8% from January to August 2024. Electric models reached 45,000 registrations in the same period, 10.11% higher than a year earlier.

“The segment is showing positive results this year and continues to grow gradually, particularly in regions that are beginning to develop more robust charging networks,” said Mr. Júnior.

After starting the semester with strong results, the truck segment saw a sharp drop in August, weighing on overall industry performance.

“Credit remains expensive, and companies are still selective in their investments. Agribusiness is not supporting this segment, which tends to recover only when conditions improve,” Mr. Júnior said.
