(InvestigateTV) — A data breach doesn’t always mean a person’s identity has been stolen, but experts say it increases the risk and is a reason to monitor accounts and credit closely.

James Lee, president of the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), said many people don’t realize something is wrong until the damage is already done.

“A lot of times, they don’t really know that it’s happened, they don’t really know why. Where it becomes heartbreaking, is it gets used to impersonate someone for their unemployment benefits, their housing benefits, their food assistance benefits – things that they need to live, now somebody else has taken it away from them. Because of data that was stolen, that they didn’t even know was exposed,” Lee said.

Lee said the first step is to monitor credit and look for unusual purchases — whether it’s $5 or $500.

“When you’re seeing charges that you did not make, then it’s time to start notifying other people,” Lee said.

If an unrecognized charge appears, Lee said consumers should contact the credit bureaus and dispute any errors. He also said not to wait if something feels off — moving quickly can help limit further damage.

Lee cautioned consumers to be careful about who they are communicating with, particularly if they receive calls, emails, or texts claiming to offer help after a breach.

“A lot of times, if you include the word ‘scam’ in the search term, it will tell you — this is a scam phone number, this is a scam website, don’t fall for this,” Lee said.

For those feeling overwhelmed, Lee said there is no need to navigate the process alone.

“There’s always going to be somebody who can help you. Whether it’s the ITRC or a family member or some other organization,” Lee said.

The Identity Theft Resource Center offers free resources for people dealing with identity theft and data breach fallout. Consumers can find help through the “Victim Help Center” tab at idtheftcenter.org.
